EMDR Therapy

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is an evidence-based treatment, proven through research, to be an effective therapeutic modality. This type of therapy can be applied to a broad range of personal and emotional difficulties.

EMDR is a body-based technique that uses bilateral stimulation. It is designed to resolve traumatic memories in the brain that are unprocessed and “stuck”.

Through the use of bilateral stimulation and your therapist guiding you through a particular EMDR protocol, EMDR decreases the strength of the distress associated with the traumatic memories and effectively moves the memory to the past tense while also lessening its negative impact. EMDR therapy seeks to aide in providing you with perspectives and understanding that will lead to healthy behaviors and interactions going forward after traumatic memories have been processed and resolved.

Who can EMDR therapy help?

EMDR has been very successful in helping treat people who suffer from many different events and diagnoses some of which include:

  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Relational problems
  • Abuse
  • Self Esteem issues
  • Anxiety
  • Panic Attacks
  • Phobias
  • Disturbing/distressing memories
  • Addictions and substance abuse
  • Post-traumatic stress
  • Grief and Loss

How long does this sort of treatment take?

A typical EMDR therapy session lasts from 60-90 minutes. The length of sessions and duration of treatment are unique to each person and their level of need. People have reported that their time in session is less overall with EMDR than in other therapeutic treatments.

Do you offer EMDR therapy online via telehealth?

Yes, we utilize a HIPAA compliant platform that was designed for EMDR therapists to conduct EMDR sessions with their clients.

I’ve heard that EMDR trained therapists use a special protocol in parts of the therapy sessions, what does that mean?

All EMDR therapists who have completed the basic training are trained in something called the EMDR basic protocol. This protocol involves a three-pronged approach which:

  • processes past events and builds new associative links with adaptive information.
  • targets the current circumstances that elicit distress as well as triggers and decreases their level of disturbance.
  • and through guided imagery, future events are considered to assist you in developing skills needed for adaptive functioning.
